The Divas Are Coming, The Divas Are Coming!

By Steven Housman

It was a divalicious season, especially in New York City where Streisand “returned to her roots” performing several standards in a small Greenwich Village club (The Village Vanguard –capacity 123) and the neighborhood where she got her start 48 years ago. Streisand performed a 13-song set including nine tracks from her new jazz-inspired album "Love Is The Answer," which was released Tuesday, September 29.

Besides hawking her new perfume "Forever,"Mariah Carey performed three songs on NBC's "Today Show" on October 2 to promote her latest musical endeavor, "Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel," also released September 29. In addition, Carey granted her fans another performance on ABC’s all-gal gabfest “The View” on October 2. Incidentally, Streisand was interviewed by NBC’s “Today Show" co-host Meredith Viera in the same two-hour span as Mariah’s first appearance on the same show. Have your sequins popped off yet?

Madonna made the smartest leap by sharing a pizza pie on "The Late Show With David Letterman" September 30 to promote her grandest greatest hits compilation to date, "Celebration," released the day before.Yes, also on September 29! Madonna's past visits to Dave’s chair have proven to be a sales juggernaut for Her Madgesty and a ratings spike for Letterman, when the pair have shown other late night talk-fests just how entertaining the midnight hour can be.

Did you set your Diva DVR’s accordingly?

Incidentally, if Mariah reaches #1 with this album, it will put her in a tie with Madonna for seven #1 albums. Grand dame Streisand holds the record with eight #1 albums! In addition, Streisand also remains the only female artist in the Top Ten artists of all-time, and third just behind Elvis and The Beatles, respectively.
